How can something smaller-than-small inspire you to dream big?
Discover the ‘science of small’ and the scientist in you!
Think of all the amazing things you’d notice about the world if you had X-ray vision. You’d see hairy bugs bobbing about, blood cells multiplying and ribbon-shaped proteins! Get a glimpse of the World of tiny, tiny things in this studio. Compare a DIY (do-it-your-own) with factory-made microscopes, (the best we can do without X-ray vision!), and investigate why cells and DNA are shaped in multiple ways, and how every shape is defined by function. Imagine how these little shapes can inspire themes for art and crafts!
Next, we transform the kitchen into our science lab. Find out what ‘tiny stuff’ can be found in food and water. Conduct experiments on how much protein, sugar, vitamins, and minerals are in your daily diet. How do these affect your everyday feelings? How can you chemically reengineer your favorite recipes to be healthier? With earth’s population growing fast, will there be enough clean, drinkable water for all living things in the future?
Putting to practice all that you’ve learned, create 2D artworks and 3D crafts inspired by shape, function, good life, and sustainability. Sell your science-meets-art and crafts products at the summer camp marketplace.
Learn to innovate while having fun
As a Young Outliers scientist, you are naturally curious. Learn to connect the “whys” to “what-ifs”. Test the possibilities and discover the unknown. Turn your discoveries into scientific breakthroughs that will one day help save lives. Invent new solutions to everyday problems. Develop the skills you need to become a visionary leader, with or without that X-ray vision.
